I got my first photos into the Gazette’s Magazine section today. The Magazine section is part of the Sunday edition and they are generally very photo friendly. The photo shown was taken in the bowels of the Gazette’s basement underneath the printer. I picked it because I thought it looked sortof like the bowels of a space station. The ligthsabers were very faint for the purposes of photography, so getting the lightsabers to show up with out completely underexposing the image was difficult. I used a flash on the lowest setting to back light Darth and throw a little light on to the Jedi.

Last Saturday, I had a video shoot for the Billings Gazette of the Billings Band No Cigar. It took us awhile to get everything set up working properly, but I am very pleased with the end result. The picture is a quickie that I shot after the video shoot. Its not great, but it works for a newspaper band shot.
This weekend the Custer’s Last Stand reenactment is taking place in Hardin, Montana. I covered it for the Billings Gazette. I used four video cameras including two GoPros on cavalry reenactor Mark Robertson. It was a fun time and a challenging project considering I had to turnaround and have it edited before midnight. The first picture is of Mark that I took with my 5D, the second is a frame grab from the camera that I put on his flag.
A lightning storm passed over this evening, so I thought I would go at and try and capture some bolts. Unfortunately, there was a whole lot of lightning flashes and very few bolts. Here’s a couple shots from the evening. Of Note, the first shot was at 1600 ISO and the second was at 12800. The third shot is an unedited close up of the second one to give you an idea of the noise on the 5d MKIII.
The Gazette is doing a story about a group of locals who dress up as Star Wars characters for charity events. Needless to say this was a nerd’s fantasy shoot, so I was pretty excited about this one. I can’t post many pics here, but I may post more when the story is released. Here is one that didn’t make the final cut.
On my way to WalMart to pickup two things I need to combat my least favorite things about summer – Benadryl for my allergy to grass and Off for mosquitoes – I noticed it was going to be a pretty spectacular sunset. So I took a quick detour at nearby Lake Elmo and took a few shots.
Yesterday, I posted some silly pics of myself goofing around on the cliffs over looking the Yellowstone River north of Worden. Those were pics that I took while waiting for the sun to lower a bit. Here are the landscapes that I shot.
A couple of days ago, my cigarette lighter socket stopped working. Since my iPhone’s radio transmitter is powered from the lighter, I haven’t been able to listen to Pandora while driving . This unfortunate event has forced me to listen to Billings’ awful radio stations while commuting. Driving into work two days ago, Exile’s disco hit ‘I want to kiss you all over‘ came on the radio, and since that time it had been continuously playing in my mind until this evening. In order to purge it from my skull, I had tried listening to everything from Punk Rock to Opera to Blues to Mariachi , but nothing worked. The falsetto sung lyric’ till the night closes in’ kept ringing in my head. It kept ringing even as I was exploring new areas of the Yellowstone Wilderness Preserve today.
The area that I explored today, was the cliffs that overlooked the Yellowstone River. I’ve been shooting the river a lot lately, but never from this side, so I thought I would see how difficult it was to access.
The hike turned out to be an easy 25 minute hike through prairie dog country. It wasn’t very scenic, but the pay off was worth it.
The view was fantastic, and the cliffs were a blast to climb over. I even decided to try and take some self portraits with a timer as I climbed on around the limestone.
This was my make shift tripod for the last shot:
While posing precariously close to the edge of one of the cliffs, a loud cracking noise erupted from the rock that I was on, and a few rock fell off.
When I had safely inched back to safer ground, I noticed a little country ditty had begun to drown out the adrenaline pumping through my system. And after a moment, an immense amount of joy overtook me as I realized Roger Alan Wade’s ‘If you’re gonna be dumb, you gotta be tough.’ had — well– exiled Exile from my mind.
I’ll post some of the photos from today’s shoot tomorrow.
