Today, ETHEL and Robert Mirabal were in my studio today. Robert is a Grammy Award Winning flutist and one of ETHEL’s founders and viola player, Ralph Farrs , is a Grammy nominated musician who has worked with Leonard Bernstein, Martin Scorsese, Depeche Mode, Natalie Merchant, Harry Connick Jr., Allen Ginsberg, Yo-Yo Ma and Gorillaz. The rest of ETHEL consisted of violinsists Tema Watstein and Kip Jones and cellist Dorothy Lawson.
All of the musicians were incredibly talented and fun to work with. Although, as usual, I wasn’t really able appreciate their music until after they had left. When I am recording musical acts it is usually just me working the soundboard and anywhere from 3 to 6 cameras, I am usually running through checklists in my head of all the things that I need to do to make sure that I don’t screw up. I am so busy worrying about all the variables that the music kind of floats in the background of my head. It isn’t until post-production where I can really hear the music, and this case be wowed. If you get the opportunity, I would recommend checking them out. I wasn’t expecting much before they came in the studio, but I am now a fan.
